청춘

사무엘 울만 (1840 -1924)

​

청춘이란 인생의 어떤 한 시기가 아니라

마음가짐을 뜻하나니

장밋빛 볼, 붉은 입수르 부드러운 무릎이 아니라

풍부한 상상력과 왕성한 감수성과 의지력

그리고 인생의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 신선함이라네

​

청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기,

안이함을 뿌리치는 모험심,

그 탁월한 정신력을 뜻하나니

때로는 스무 살 청년보다 예순 살 노인이 더 청춘일 수 있네.

누구나 세월만으로 늙어가지 않고

이상을 잃어버릴 때 늙어간다네

​

세월은 피부의 주름을 늘리지만

열정을 가진 마음을 시들게 하진 못하지.

근심과 두려움, 자신감을 잃는 것이

우리 기백을 죽이고 마음을 시들게 하네.

그대가 젊어 있는 한

예순이건 열여섯이건 가슴 속에는

경이로움을 향한 동경과 아이처럼 왕성한 탐구심과

인생에서 기쁨을 얻고자 하는 열망이 있는 법,

​

그대와 나의 가슴 속에는 이심전심의 안테나가 있어

사람들과 신으로부터 아름다움과 희망,

기쁨, 용기, 힘의 영감을 받는 한

언제까지나 청춘일 수 있네,

​

영감이 끊기고

정신이 냉소의 눈 (雪)에 덮이고

비탄의 얼음에 갇힐 때

그대는 스무 살이라도 늙은이가 되네

그러나 머리를 높이 들고 희망의 물결을 붙잡는 한,

그대는 여든 살이어도 늘 푸른 청춘이네.

Youth

Youth is not a time of life;

it is a state of mind;

it is not a matter of rosy cheeks,red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions;

it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

​

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite,

for adventure over the love of ease.

​This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

​

Years may wrinkle the skin,

but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart

and turns the spirit back to dust.

​

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder,

the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next,

and the joy of the game of living.

​

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;

so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer,

courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long

are you young.

​

When the aerials are down,

and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism

and the ice of pessimism,

then you are grown old, even at twenty,

but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism,

there is hope you may die young at eighty.
